What is Marine Pollution?

Marine Pollution is the introduction of garbage, waste and other substances into the marine environment via human factors such as recreation and agriculture  as well as natural factors. This type of pollution affects the marine environment and its ecosystem, biodiversity and the health of living organisms. (National Geographic, n.d)

Types of Marine Pollution

1. Oil Pollution-Crude oil, paints lubricants

2.
Radioactive pollution- Dumping of nuclear waste

3. Chemical pollution- Runoff from rivers; pesticides and insecticides, herbicides.

4. Sewage waste-  Feacal matter and nutrients

5. Gaseous- Plastic Waste, Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide

Ways To Mitigate Marine Pollution

1. Recycling helps to preserve ocean ecology. (Recycle plastic bottles and other recyclable items)

2. Stop practicing improper disposal of garbage. (Do not throw garbage into gullies and nearby bushes)

3.Farmers can use organic farming techniques instead of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

4.  We all need to put efforts to clean the sea beaches. If beaches will be cleaned, marine pollution can be reduced to some extent.

5.  Reduce the use of plastic made material to save marine life and our environment. (Businesses should consider using more eco-friendly containers like those made of paper)

6. Practice regular drain cleaning especially in areas near waterbodies

7. Spread awareness among people about conservation and the importance of the marine environment
